Maha Kumbh Mela comes every 144 years and the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela holds even greater significance due to a rare celestial alignment, making it one of the most auspicious gatherings in history. Reportedly, during Maha Kumbh pilgrims witnessed a special drone show held in Prayagraj from January 24th, 2025 to January 26th, 2025 where Santan heritage was demonstrated with the help of modern technology. Prayagraj is hosting Maha Kumbh Mela this time. For the record, in the seventh century, Xuanzang, a Chinese Traveller, wrote his experiences about the inauguration and faith at Kumbh Mela. He stated that kings and traders bathed in the sacred waters of Triveni Sangam and provided huge donations.
In a strategic move, the Uttar Pradesh government launched the “Digi Kumbh” initiative for the Maha Kumbh Mela in January 2025. It made use of new technology such as AI & real-time surveillance systems for monitoring the largest religious gathering at Prayagraj to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
The UP police deployed underwater drones fitted with new imaging systems for patrolling the waters of Triveni Sangam, a confluence of three rivers, in which pilgrims took baths. This equipment of surveillance along with life buoys, that are remote-controlled, provide incessant surveillance of water bodies. Moreover, these drones provide real-time data to the command center to improve the safety of Mahakumbh pilgrims.
According to Rajeev Mishra, Inspector General of Police, who introduced a high-speed underwater drone, said that the underwater drones can travel at larger distances. Moreover, it can provide accurate data about suspicious activity taking place beneath the water so that the police authorities can take quick action. Reportedly, the UP government has also launched tethered drones that will give aerial views of Mahakumbh Mela for identifying the influx of pilgrims who require medical intervention, besides briefing the police personnel about security issues.
One of the officers told the media that tethered drones would offer real-time data about any site of unauthorized flying objects to legal enforcement authorities. He further said that these drones will provide police personnel with the latitude & longitude location of the operator.
